…But I am pretty sure I need to think it through a bit more first.
What I am thinking of doing, is checking with a couple of artists if they are willing to let me use some of their songs for a mix, then release said mix on a homepage with a counter on it for downloads.
There shall be two buttons. One button that is “Download” which is just plain download. One button that says “Donate and Download” which will take you to a donation page for a charity (I am thinking the Extra Life charity, but will check for others aswell), and after you donated, you get to download the song and maybe get a thanks from the artists or something.
For everyone who doesn’t donate and just download, I will donate $1-$5 depending on how many downloads I expect from the mix.
As I said, I need to look this over so I don’t end up making myself go bankrupt / fucking people over due to not being able to donate.
Today, the wonderful Drum’n’Bass and Dubstep duo Camo & Krooked released their album “Cross The Line”, and being the sucker that I am for their music, I bought it with no hesitation.
Seeing as I have much love for these guys, I want to give the album a honest and full review for those of you who might consider getting the album. I will review them song for song and then add a overall score at the bottom.
1. “Get Dirty (feat. TC)” [DnB]
During the start of this song, it sounded like a modified intro to “Make the call”, but after realizing that TC was working on this one aswell, it sort of explained itself. It has an amazing build-up for the drop that feels creative and unique. The overall song keeps an alright tempo and feels like a good start to the album. 7/10
2. “All Fall Down (feat. Shaz Sparks)” [Dubstep]
For anyone who listened to / bought the single for Breezeblock remember this song. It feels like the typical Camo & Krooked DnB build-up, but out of nowhere, this really heavy dubstep drops comes in and just blows you away. Overall powerful track. 8/10
3. “Breezeblock” [DnB]
As I mentioned before, alot of people will probably have heard this song before, especially when it came delivered with such an amazing video. The song really builds up a good hype for when the actual drop hits, and when it drops.. My god does it hit you hard. This track is just fantastic from start to finish. 9/10
4. “Cross The Line (feat. Ayah Marar)” [DnB]
This track actually suprised me. To say that I was disappointed is the wrong phrasing, but I was underwhelmed with this song. It’s still an OK song, but it wasn’t what I expected when they named the album after it. 6/10
5. “Make The Call (feat. TC)” [Electro]
This track was the last single released before the album itself dropped, and I personally thing this track is good, however not as good as the DnB version they released with the single. This was also a bit underwhelmed, but I’ll probably still play this at some point for a Electro set or similar. 6/10
6. “Run Riot” [Dubstep]
With a almost CREEPY intro, I was expecting this to be a weird remix of some sorts. But when the distorted synth hits, you start getting a feeling of what is on the way. Then it happens.. The fucking powerful drop into a dubstep song comes. It really transforms the song into a beast of a track. It still has this creepy vibe over it, but I really like this track for what it is. 8/10
7. “Anubis” [DnB]
The calm and almost soothing start of the song makes you think it’s going to be a really calm and collected DnB song, and it even hints towards some liquid style DnB in the intro.. But those sneaky bastards will suprise you and suckerpunch you with this drop. The song explodes into this really agressive DnB song with a dark vibe to it all the way through. This is for everyone who loves the darker side of Camo & Krooked. 7/10
8. “In The Future (feat. Jenna G / Futurebound) [DnB]
This track has a dark sounding intro to it, but as soon as Jenna’s vocals comes in, you get the feeling that this is a song in a class of it’s own. As usual when Futurebound is included on a track, it’s bound to have the really amazing bassline and drumbeat through the entire song. There is no massive drop in this, just a song that flows very naturally and makes you feel really happy. 8/10
9. “The Lesson (feat. Skittles)” [Dubstep]
Sadly, I have to say that this is the first song of the album I wasn’t a fan of. I can see where they wanted to be with this, but it just feels like they’re trying to do as much sound as possible in as little time as possible. The bass is just too much, and I can’t really say I like Skittles vocals through this track either. 5/10
10. “Watch It Burn (feat. Ayah Marar)” [DnB]
I heard this track a couple of days prior to release, and I was intrigued back then. On this album, it feels like Ayah Marar is getting revenge for her Vocals on “Cross The Line”. Her voice fits this song so much more, and she really makes the song feel so much more powerful. I also absolutely love the bassline and melody on this track. It’s one of those tracks that makes you feel pumped up as hell and just makes you want to dance your ass off. 9/10
11. “Hot Pursuit” [DnB]
I was a bit cautious about this song at a start, but after the drop comes in, I got sucked in. It’s a really hard and agressive track, but not so agressive it feels dark, just very powerful and hard-hitting. The really hard intro is currently in control of my neck as I can’t sit still. It has this dubsteppy feel to it without making the song into a drumstep track. It has it’s downside with a bit too many samples in my opinion, but that’s just a matter of taste I guess. 7/10
12. “Funk You” [Electro / DnB]
This song confused the everliving hell out of me at first. When I first heard it I thought I’d accidentally put on another album, but the song does genuinely start off as a Electro track and later transforms itself into a proper DnB song. I can’t say that it was what I expected it, and I am still not 100% sure what I feel about it, but as individual songs I would’ve loved them, but when they’re combined like this, it feels a bit weird. 6/10 (Individual: 7/10 Electro 8/10 DnB)
13. “Far Away” [DnB]
Now this.. This right here.. Is my favourite track from this album. Everything just feels so perfect with it. The synth melody, the bassline, the drumbeat.. EVERYTHING is just so perfect for my taste in this track. This will most definately be my new “I want to play this every DnB set I do”-track. It just has so much energy, so much power.. It’s just a perfect track for me. Straight up 10/10 for this track.
14. “Afterlife” [DnB]
This track starts off really slow and melodic with strings and a slight synth loop. Then, out of nowhere, a drop comes in, and you’re treated with a very calm and relaxing drumbeat, but over a slightly more energetic string and bassline over it. It is a really good song for those nights where you can’t decide if you want to stay up or go to sleep, because this song will keep you distracted and calm, and will keep you up for 3 extra minutes to ponder your decision! 8/10
Overall score: 9/10
I really like this album alot, and this will be played ALOT during my free time and during my sets. The mix of hyper and agressive music just makes for an amazing album. I would defo say that this is the best album release of this year (so far) when it comes to DnB!
